| Section On Oct 5th the Decatur Planning Commission recommended approval of the new condo proposal for the East Howard-Hillyer site. The Commission approval was accompanied by several conditions or recommendations. One important condition was that the height is not to exceed the proposed 52 feet. There were also recommendations that a tree survey be performed on trees in and nearby the site, and that an escrow account be setup by the developer to cover the costs of tree removal on adjacent properties, should they die as a result of construction. The City Commission will hear the proposal on Monday Oct 16th. Please plan to attend. We hope that citizens will encourage the commissioners to proceed with changes to the Zoning Laws to minimize the opportunity for this type of conflict in the future. Thank you to everyone that supported the efforts of DecaturHighRise.org during the previous year. Our collective efforts have been very effective. Mr. Rohrig has submitted a new proposal that specifies a building of 52 feet in height, instead of the old 80 feet in height. That change is extremely important to the future of the Old Decatur neighborhood. Some of the City Commissioners have expressed an interest in changing the Zoning laws that allow 80 foot tall buildings to be placed next to R60 properties. Before you take your yard signs down and chalk this up as a win for the little guys, consider channeling the energy into encouraging the City Commissioners to act on appropriate Zoning Law changes. So, thanks again, and please plan to attend the Planning & City Commission Public Hearings to learn more about the proposed development and to express your thoughts, concerns and suggestions.
The City Commission will
PROBABLY hear the proposal Monday Oct 19th |
